Here's a fun little video of Lars The Shithead Ulrich several years before his Napster tantrum. In the video, Lars encourages his fans to go ahead and create Metallica bootleg products. He thinks it's a splendid idea.
He just loves his fans and wants them to be happy and enjoy Metallica as fully as possible. What a swell guy. What pretty, pretty eighties hair.
Here's asshole Lars several years later in his anti-Napster commercial illustrating for the fans he loves so dearly how file-sharing is stealing and wrong. What happened to the pro-bootleg Lars?
My guess is some scumbags wearing suits from the record company convinced Lars he needed to take a stand or he was going to lose a fortune and Lars was stupid enough to believe them.
The record company was in a panic over the dramatic changes the internet was forcing onto their business model and this was probably their best idea. They just needed a chump from a popular band to try to sell their strategy to the public and Lars became that chump.
Of course, that's just my opinion and I could be wrong, but I'm not.
